The business of the College of Management is learning and knowledge creation, and all members of the staff are encouraged to take advantage of the development opportunities around you, both to help the college grow and to help you carry the torch of learning, knowledge, and skills forward with you wherever you go.

While it is easiest to appreciate those opportunities that tie directly to your work, we recognize the value of taking a broader perspective in supporting professional development, which is why we have asked all managers to build both time and resources into their fiscal year planning to provide for the development of all members of the staff.

We are especially enthusiastic about leveraging learning opportunities here at the College that will both educate and foster a sense of community.

Ultimately the individual employees are the best persons to decide what development path is best for them in life; my goal is to encourage and support everyone in our community to grow, develop, thrive, and achieve our dreams and aspirations.

Development Opportunities

To assist in your development planning, a list of development activities has been prepared for your consideration.  Please note that this list is not exhaustive, however, it should serve as a good starting place for your professional development interests.

CoM Exec Ed Classes:  Executive Programs makes their unsold program seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.  The complete list of available classes and schedules can be found on their site.  If you would like to reserve a seat, contact the Huang Executive Education Center at 404.894.8700 for details. 

IMPACT:  Guest speakers share their thoughts on contemporary issues on Wednesdays from 4:30pm to 6pm.  All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend.

Leadership Forum:  Business leaders share their expertise.  Due to the popularity of this program, availability is limited.  Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Huang Executive Education Center at 404.894.8700 to inquire about available seats.

Formal Classes:  College courses at Georgia Tech (or any other state college or university) can often be taken with tuition reimbursement (% rate varies) as a benefit of working for the state system.  Supervisor approval is required and acceptance into a graduate program may be required for some courses.  Many classes are conveniently available in the evening.  NEW! Thanks to a recent change in policy employees may now informally sit in on classes without officially being registered for them.  Check with the Office of Human Resources for more details on reimbursement options and registration procedures.  

Office of Organizational Development:  The Office of Organizational Development (OOD) is an institute entity dedicated to employee development.  Check out their blog, Training@GT, and the OOD Master Training Calendar for a list of available courses and certificate tracks.  In addition to paid classes, their calendar lists a variety of free sessions on contemporary topics.

Bulk Training On or Offsite:  When at least 10 or more people are interested in completing a specific training course, it generally becomes cost effective to offer that class in-house.  If you have identified a course that multiple College of Management employees would be interested in taking as a group, please contact the Professional Development Committee about possible training opportunities.

Options Classes:  Options classes are less formal courses focused on recreational interests such as martial arts, guitar, and photography.  The courses are offered after-hours to employees and students, and they can be a great way to unwind after work in a fun group setting. Registration starts at the beginning of each semester.  Details can be found at the Student Center Website under "Places to Go".

Campus Recreation Center: The Campus Recreation Center (CRC) is dedicated to physical fitness and recreation (aerobics, weight-lifting, basketball, swimming, and more).  Membership rates and the registration process are here.

Techmasters: This Georgia Tech club, which is open to all GT employees and meets weekly on Thursdays from 7:30am to 9:00am, focuses on the improvement of public speaking skills.  Please see their website for more details.

Barnes and Noble:  Our college bookstore carries a large assortment of business and technical books, apparel, and other merchandise.  They offer a 10% discount on GT department pcard purchases on most items as well as a 20% discount on school supplies, clothing, gifts, and books during the Faculty/Staff/Student "Appreciation Week" at the end of the Fall and Spring semesters.
